Blackbeard full cast

Blackbeard

About the Costume
A dark look was desired for this character so a long black velvet coat was chosen with black trousers, dark charcoal grey vest, loose fitting white shirt and wine colored sash. Added to this are a wine colored headwrap, black boots, and a leather baldric to hold his pistols and sword. A leather hat (not shown) is worn for Blackbeard's first appearance.

About the Character
Blackbeard (Edward Teach) is considered to be one of the most blood thirsty pirates ever to ply the waters of the Eastern Atlantic coast. In this musical another side of Blackbeard is revealed in his love of Mary who tempers his hatred of the people and government of the Carolinas.

Mary

About the Costume
Mary's dress is a wine colored heavy moire fabric with a small amount of gold trim. Design was chosen as a way to distinguish her as being "middle class", and the wine color to give her a tie-in with the wine color of Blackbeard's sash and headwrap.

About the Character
The character of Mary is loosely based on the Edward Teach's 16 year old wife, Mary Ormond. Her incarnation here is as a woman in love with Edward, but repulsed by "Blackbeard's" violent nature.

Stede Bonnet

About the Costume
The character of Mr. Bonnet called for flamboyant costuming. His main costume (pictured here) has a gold and red brocade coat, gold vest, red knickers, and white shirt with jabot as well as stockings and shoe buckles. There is a second costume for his "pirate look" which has a green and gold brocade vest, tan knickers, and an off white shirt with jabot.

About the Character
The character of Stede Bonnet is based on a real life person who had dealings with Blackbeard and was himself hung for piracy soon after Blackbeard's death. This Mr. Bonnet is the comic relief for this musical. He is a bumbling character who believes himself to be a shrewd negotiator and great pirate in his own right. Ultimately, he gives the laughs to the show to relieve the almost constant tension set up by the story.

Mr. Hands

About the Costume
Mr. Hands is dressed to look the part of an unsavory character. Clothed in earth tones and dark grey, he looks like our bad dreams of a pirate. Costume consists of brown velvet period coat, tan vest, charcoal grey pants, olive sash and headwrap, and off white shirt. Turn-down boots complete his look.

About the Character
Mr. Hands is a true blood thirsty pirate. He believes that no woman should ever be on a ship as this causes bad luck to any endeavor. He is all for killing off the hostages instead of returning them to their homes.

Georgette

About the Costume
As the local tavern owner, Georgette needed to be dressed as though she had a bit of money to spend. Since she was cast as a red head, green was chosen as her color. Green wool skirt and laced front vest with a white embroidered blouse with matching wool cuffs.

About the Character
Besides being the owner of the tavern that is the regular hangout for pirates, Georgette is Blackbeard's ex wife. She is still very much in love with Edward Teach and tries to warn Mary to stay away from him although this is probably more due to her love of him than an attempt to keep Mary safe from the pirates.
