Guys & Dolls
GUYS & DOLLS began its original Broadway run at the 46th Street Theater on November 24, 1950. Based on two Damon Runyon stories, "The Idyll of Miss Sarah Brown" and "Blood Pressure" with characters borrowed from other of his stories, the storyline follows two gamblers, Nathan Detroit and Sky Masterson, through troubles with love and other gangsters. Detroit runs a floating craps game ("The Oldest Established") which his fiance of 14 years, Adelaide, wants him to shut down, but Nathan wants that one-more-big-score first. He meets with Sky Masterson, a fellow who will bet on anything, and makes a wager with him that he cannot get Sister Sarah Brown of the Sav-A-Soul Mission to fall in love with him and travel to Havana with him. Meanwhile, Miss Adelaide is headlining at The Hot Box Club performing with her girls "A Bushel and a Peck" and "Take Back Your Mink", and "Adelaide's Lament" in which she sings of illness due to stress and dashed hopes. Sky does manage to lure Sarah Brown into flying to Havana with him, and Nathan finds a place for the craps game...the Sav-A-Soul Mission House! In order to win Sarah's love, Sky makes a bet on a single roll of the dice that all of the gamblers will attend a prayer meeting at the Mission if he wins the roll. Even after all the promises, the two females, Adelaide and Sarah are not sure they are convinced that their men have changed their ways ("Marry The Man Today"). In the end both "GUYS" marry their "DOLLS" ... and ... live happily ever after?
