Les Miserables
Based on the novel of the same name by Victor Hugo, the show tells the tales of a large cast of characters and their interwoven lives in early 19th Century France. Prisoner 24601, Jean Valjean, is the major player in this saga. The show begins with his release from prison after serving 19 years for stealing food for his family. We follow Valjean through years of struggle and the French Revolution. We meet Fantine, a prostitute and her daughter Cosette who Valjean rescues from near slavery with the Thenardiers and their daughter Eponine. Javert, a policeman, haunts Valjean's every move holding the possibility of re-imprisonment over his head. Cosette and Eponine both love the same man, Marius...who loves both women for different reasons. The Paris uprising splits everyone apart and in the end leaves Eponine dying in Marius' arms. Because Valjean shows great mercy and compassion, Javert feels only great despair and commits suicide. Marius and Cosette marry in a great ceremony at which Marius learns of the treachery of the Thenardiers and the truth about Valjean. In the end, Valjean awaits his own demise giving a written confession of all to Cosette to read after he passes. The spirits of Fantine and Eponine come to take Valjean to paradise as everyone who has died sing a reprise of "DO YOU HEAR THE PEOPLE SING?"
