THE PRODUCERS

Based on his 1968 film of the same name, Mel Brooks wrote this irreverent musical telling the story of a Broadway producer (Max Bialystock) and his accountant/partner Leo Bloom who oversell shares in a Broadway Musical. In working on Max's financial books, Leo had noticed that one could make more money from a flop show if one sold more shares than existed. Max and Leo set out to do exactly this. First find the worst musical ever written. They do. It is called SPRINGTIME FOR HITLER. Second, hire the worst director in New York. They do...Roger De Bris. Third, open on Broadway with the worst possible cast. They do. Fourth, close the show to terrible reviews. And finally, escape to Brazil with $2 million of the backers' money. There is one little flaw in the plan. One they did not consider...the show is a comic success! Eventually, they are brought to justice; tried and convicted and sent to jail where they start all over again. In the end, they are pardoned and allowed to return to Broadway and a string of hit shows!
