WAITING FOR GUFFMAN
Original stage adaptation of the Christopher Guest/Eugene Levy mockumentary film "WAITING FOR GUFFMAN". Blaine, Missouri is celebrating its 150th anniversary and putting on a musical based on the history of the town. It is an original piece written by its director Corky St. Clair. This show within a show tells of the founding of the town in which the settlers are convinced by their guide that they have reached California when, in fact, they have only reached Missouri. Subsequently, after a visit from the President who is given a stool made by a local boy, Blaine becomes the "Stool Capital of the World". Soon Blaine is visited by an alien from Mars. RED, WHITE AND BLAINE ends with a schmaltzy patriotic number. The cast believe that the show is destined for Broadway, and Corky uses some of his contacts in New York to invite a producer named Mort Guffman to review the play. The cast consists of a Dairy Queen employee, Libbie Mae Brown, a socially inept dentist, Dr. Allen Pearl, a pair of travel agents who have never traveled, Ron and Sheila Albertson, a retired taxidermist, Clifford Wooley, and Johnny Savage, a car mechanic. The show is well received by locals, and when Corky brings the man the cast believes to be Mort Guffman backstage to talk with the cast, they discover that he is a business man in town for the birth of his niece. All their dreams of glory smashed, the performers scatter to the wind. Libbie Mae Brown goes back to work at a Dairy Queen in Alabama. The Albertsons pursue their dream of becoming movie stars by working in Hollywood as extras. Dr. Pearl moves to Florida where he entertains retired Jews in nursing homes. Corky returns to New York where he runs a boutique selling movie memorabilia such as Brat Pack bobbleheads, Dinner with Andre action figures, and Remains Of The Day lunch boxes.
